Abstract

Even though most women’s roles throughout the Seljuk era were devoted to housework and family concerns, certain prominent women had positions in the ruling system. Another feature of this time was the emergence of well-known philosophers such as Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali and Imam Fakhr al-Razi, both of whom incorporated teachings about the role of women in their works and investigated the behavioral aspects and characteristics of women in society. In addition to examining the role of women in politics, we discuss Ghazali’s and Imam Fakhr Razi’s views on women to assess the influence of political situations and affairs in developing the perspectives of these two scholars.

This study was conducted using a descriptive-analytical method, and it was prepared by gathering the contents of original sources and contemporary investigations.

The findings of this research reveal that the political context of the Seljuk period, as well as the importance of women in the sphere of politics, caused Ghazali and Fakhr Razi to represent women in their works in a cruel unfavorable way. In other words, some of these two people’s views and beliefs were impacted by the status of women in Iran throughout the middle periods, when the definition of women’s roles was restricted to the household, and they had no right to engage in political or social affairs. Some beliefs originated from jurisprudential statements and the patriarchal perspective toward women at the time regarded them to be weak creatures, both intellectually and physically

Keywords: al-Ghazali, Imam Fakhr al- Razi, Nasihat-al Muluk (counsel for kings), Kimiyaye Sa’adat (the alchemy of happiness), al-Tafsir al- Kabir (the large commentary)
